Sporting Set for Comprehensive Diomande Deal: Fixed Fee, Bonuses, and Resale Percentage
Negotiations between Sporting CP and Nottingham Forest are in their final stages, with the 22-year-old center-back set for a move to the Premier League. Sporting's demands are reportedly close to being met by the English club. The Lions are losing a defensive cornerstone, but not for a fixed fee below €40 million, with additional performance-based bonuses (individual and collective) and a percentage of any future resale profit.
The Ivorian international is poised to fulfill his dream of playing in the Premier League. Talks between the clubs have accelerated, and it's highly likely that the Lions' number 26 will not feature in Saturday's Troféu 5 Violinos against Monaco at Alvalade, scheduled for 7:30 PM. Forest's interest has been intense, largely driven by manager Oliver Glasner, who had previously scouted the player during his time at Crystal Palace. It's worth noting that Palace had reportedly set aside over €50 million last summer to sign the defender. The pursuit has been relentless, and his departure is expected within hours.
Recruited in 2023 from Midtjylland (who had loaned him to Mafra in Liga 2), the center-back initially cost €7.5 million, with an additional €5 million in variables. This inflated sum was divided into three tranches of €1.66 million, progressively activated after 30, 60, and 90 official matches (each with a minimum of 45 minutes played). The final installment was settled at the start of last season.
Sporting's total financial outlay for the Ivorian international, however, reached €14.5 million. This is because the Lions exercised a buy-option for 10 of the 20 percent of the future resale profit held by Midtjylland for €2 million, effectively halving the Danish club's future percentage. Given the strong interest from the English market, the invested amount reflects the success of a gamble on a player rescued from the second tier, who is now set to generate a capital gain of €25.5 million. Of this, 10 percent (€2.55 million) will go to Midtjylland.
Looking ahead, Sporting will also retain 10 percent of the capital gain generated from any future sale. It wouldn't be surprising if the total package, including fixed value and bonuses, reaches €45 million. The payment structure is currently under discussion.
Diomande had recently extended his contract with the green and whites until 2030, maintaining his release clause at €80 million. He bids farewell to Alvalade having played a total of 132 games for the club, scoring seven goals and providing three assists. His accolades include two national championship titles and one Portuguese Cup.
