Sporting: Maxi Araújo is here! In Algarve to stay (and a renewal on the horizon)

The Uruguayan winger joined the training camp in Lagos, Algarve, determined to continue wearing the Lion's crest. Chelsea and Manchester United remain attentive to the South American who shone at the World Cup, but the Sporting board maintains a firm stance and plans a contract renewal if Maxi stays.

Sporting has received a significant boost as they enter the second phase of their pre-season preparations. Maxi Araújo has returned to Portugal following his post-World Cup vacation with Uruguay. Accompanied by Rodrigo Zalazar, he joined the training camp in Lagos, Algarve, yesterday and is set to begin training today.

After a series of outstanding performances at the recent World Cup, the powerful 26-year-old left-winger returns to Alvalade with a clear focus, despite intense international interest threatening his continued stay. However, the Sporting board's conviction remains unwavering: Maxi is a pivotal player in the left flank's dynamic, and the priority is to resist offers and retain the Uruguayan.

Aware that interest will not wane until the transfer window closes, Sporting's management, as A BOLA previously reported, has activated a 'seduction plan' to secure the Uruguayan for at least another season. Furthermore, if the board succeeds in keeping one of the squad's most valuable assets until the transfer deadline, the next step is clearly defined: a contract revision that will place Maxi Araújo among the top earners in the squad, coupled with increased responsibility in the dressing room, promoting him to one of the team's leaders.

MAXI ARAÚJO... CONVINCED (FOR NOW)

While the Lions' intentions are clear, the focus now shifts to the South American winger's motivation. In this regard, it appears the scenario is also favorable for Sporting. Maxi remains fully focused on the club and is determined to surpass his numbers from last season, which was the best of his career. In the 2025/26 season, he played 47 official matches, scoring seven goals and providing five assists, playing a decisive role in Sporting's campaign.

However, the market remains vigilant. Chelsea and Manchester United continue to monitor the Uruguayan winger closely, tracking his development, although, to date, contacts have only been exploratory. The board's response is clear and unequivocal: Sporting will only consider discussing a potential transfer for an offer very close to his €80 million release clause.

ALTERNATIVE TO AN UNEXPECTED DEPARTURE

Nevertheless, despite optimism regarding Maxi's continuity, the board knows that the final decision could depend on the magnitude of offers that may emerge by the end of August. For this reason, and to prevent a potential departure caused by an irresistible offer, the club has already identified several alternatives for the left defensive flank, ensuring the squad will be prepared to respond to any undesirable market outcome.

Maxi Araújo will not be the only Uruguayan international to start training in Lagos today. Rodrigo Zalazar, who was introduced yesterday, also concluded his vacation period and joined the training camp last night. The 26-year-old midfielder became Sporting's most expensive signing in history after the Lions paid €30 million to secure him from SC Braga, representing another significant reinforcement for Rui Borges in preparation for the new season.
