President Muhammadu Buhari to host Team Nigeria

President Muhammadu Buhari is set to host the Nigerian team to the just concluded Special Olympics World Summer Games in Los Angeles, United States of America.

Team Nigeria won a total of 71 medals including 34 gold medals and Buhari on Monday, August 19 congratulated them for their feat.

In a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, the President commended the team for their diligence, dedication and wonderful performance at the games.

“President Buhari assures the athletes that the Federal Government and all Nigerians are very proud of their exhilarating and dominant performance at the Special Olympics in which they won medals in all featured events," a part of the statement read.

“The President looks forward to receiving members of the team at the Presidential Villa to celebrate their brilliant victories in Los Angeles.”

Some notable performances by Nigerians include, swimmers, Damola Roberts, Teju Ogunlela and Adebiyi Olatunji  who won silver, Dubem Emuwa and the Nigeria football team who won gold.

The 2015 World Summer Games featured 6,500 athletes representing more than 160 countries, along with 30,000 volunteers and an anticipated 500,000 spectators.

The games took place in the same Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum where the 1932 and 1984 Olympics were held.

The one-week long event ended on Sunday, August 2.
