Spanish specialist Santi Denia has been officially unveiled as the new head coach of the Czech Republic national team. The news was confirmed on Friday by the country's football association.
With this appointment, the 52-year-old coach makes history as the first foreigner to lead the Czech team. The Spaniard's contract is for a two-year term, with an option to extend.
Denia takes over from Miroslav Koubek, who stepped down following the team's disappointing performance at this summer's World Cup, where the Czechs failed to advance past the group stage. The team managed only a single point against South Africa and suffered defeats to South Korea and Mexico.
"It is a great honour for me to be here. Czech football has a fantastic history, and I am extremely motivated by this project. My only desire is to get to work as soon as possible," stated the new coach during his presentation.
Santi Denia arrives with an impressive resume, having led the Spanish Olympic team to a gold medal at the 2024 Paris Games. For many years prior, starting in 2010, he also managed Spain's youth national teams at the U17, U19, and U21 levels. Most recently, he was at the helm of Qatari club Al-Shahania last year.
His debut in charge of the Czech Republic will be in the Nations League, where the team has two home fixtures – against Croatia on September 26 and against England three days later.
The tournament campaign will also pit the Czechs against their new coach's homeland – world and European champions Spain. Regarding this, Denia commented: "I was born in Spain and worked for the federation for 15 years, but things are different now – I want to win against Spain." The coach is a good friend of and is very familiar with the 'La Roja' manager, Luis de la Fuente, who led the team to European and World titles.
