Spain Can Forget the Gasol Brothers, the Lukić Brothers Are Here!

No matter how strong our current basketball talent pool, there's always an underlying question about what happens when that generation moves on, and whether their successors will be good enough and worthy to wear the Serbian national team jersey after the biggest names. The story we're about to tell suggests we have nothing to worry about for quite some time.

Matija and Fedor Lukić, aged 16 and 13 respectively, were born in the Netherlands, but both harbored a singular desire to play for Serbia.

The elder brother gained public attention last summer when he became a European champion with the U16 national team, and again this year as a U17 World Championship runner-up.

He spent the previous year with Spanish club Zaragoza, competing in their U22 league while also featuring for the senior squad. The pinnacle of his season came this summer when senior Serbian national team coach Dušan Alimpijević included him in the roster.

This autumn, he'll have special company in Spain, as his younger brother is set to join him. Fedor signed with Zaragoza in July and will follow the same path as Matija. He also trained with the Serbian national team in his age group this past summer.

Beyond their on-court talent and future basketball prowess, Matija and Fedor primarily impress with their culture, upbringing, politeness, and ever-present smiles.
