Simeone addresses Messi vs Maradona debate and hits out at congested international calendar
Atlético Madrid manager Diego Simeone addressed the media ahead of tomorrow's La Liga trip to Alavés. The capital side are looking to extend their strong run of form in Vitoria, and Simeone will have a fully fit squad at his disposal.
Asked whether he would pick Lionel Messi or Diego Maradona for a decisive final, Simeone chose to pay tribute to both legends rather than pit them against each other: "I won't fall into the trap of picking one over the other. I was fortunate enough to play alongside Maradona, though never with Messi. As Argentines, we should simply be grateful to have had the two greatest footballers in history. Messi broke every conceivable boundary, and always with utmost respect. As an Argentine, I thank him for everything he gave us, but above all for showing us how to fight. He taught us that when things get tough, you have to keep moving forward."
The Colchoneros boss also joined the chorus of managers expressing concern over the congested international calendar and the physical toll on players, some of whom featured in nearly four matches across a short span: "It is obvious that this benefits the federations financially, but the players' opinions must be taken into account. We cannot forget that football is entertainment, and for the spectacle to be worth the ticket price, the players need adequate rest. We were able to recharge and spend time with family during the break, but from a sporting perspective, it disrupts our rhythm."
When questioned on how he would optimize the match calendar, Simeone maintained that his sole focus remains on the upcoming clash: "With all due respect, I am only thinking about Alavés. Let those whose job it is figure that out."
The Argentine expects a demanding test against one of the league's most solid defensive units: "We are facing a tough side—the team with the fewest goals conceded in the division. Quique (editor's note: Alavés head coach) is doing a fantastic job defensively, so we are in for a difficult away test."
Simeone also expressed his satisfaction with forward Julián Álvarez's form, highlighting his enthusiasm and consistency, which add vital depth to the attack. He further confirmed that Alexander Sørloth and Pablo Barrios have looked sharp in training and will feature, offering distinct tactical options for the squad.
