Shilton Fumes: If VAR Existed, Maradona's Second Goal Against England Would Have Been Disallowed

Legendary English goalkeeper Peter Shilton has revisited the infamous 1986 World Cup quarter-final clash against Argentina. In that match, the former Nottingham Forest, Leicester, and Southampton custodian conceded two goals from Diego Maradona, both of which are still debated today. The first was the notorious "Hand of God," and the second, a magnificent solo run from midfield, dubbed the "Goal of the Century."

"We could have won that game, but instead, we were cheated. They should have disallowed Maradona's other goal too, the dribble one, because there was a foul on Glenn Hoddle just before the Argentine attack began. If only VAR existed then... The referee was truly incompetent.

Another thing that infuriates me is that after making the biggest mistake of his life, he (Ali Bennaceur, the referee) even took the ball home and later auctioned it for £2 million. And not only that: Maradona met him in Tunisia, and they took a photo together. A referee who should have remained silent, instead of boasting about that mistake.

I don't want to speak ill of Maradona; he's no longer with us, but he could have come and spoken to me after the match, admitted everything. I would have forgiven him. Above all, champions should possess a tremendous sense of sportsmanship. He lacked that," Shilton stated in an interview with "La Repubblica."
