The Ukrainian made the headlines 12 months ago when he defeated the then defending champion Roger Federer in four sets in the second round.

Stakhovsky has now pulled off another big scalp by seeing off world number 10 Gulbis 6-4 6-3 7-6 (7-5) on court number two.

Gulbis may not boast the 17 grand slam titles that Federer has won during his career, but he has had a fine 2014 thus far.

The Latvian took Novak Djokovic to four sets in a losing effort in the semi-finals of the French Open last month, as well as claiming ATP titles in Nice and Marseille.

Gulbis' was partly the architect of his own downfall as he hit 31 unforced errors, but Stakhovsky was highly efficient at the net, the 28-year-old winning 32 of 45 points when he came in from the baseline.

Stakhovsky will now look to go beyond the third round at the All England Club for the first time in his career and will meet the winner or the tie between Jeremy Chardy and Marinko Matosevic.
