Sam Dyson: Jose Bautista needs to respect the game
In the middle of three Rangers errors, two benches-clearing incidents, and one epic Blue Jays comeback in game five of the American League Division Series, Dyson had a lot to be upset about on Wednesday.
The Rangers blew a one-run lead and loaded the bases on three straight errors during the seventh inning, but Dyson took the most offense to an exuberant bat flip by Bautista after he hit an estimated 442-foot home run in the seventh that gave the Blue Jays a 6-3 lead and win.
"Jose needs to calm that down, just kind of respect the game a little more," Dyson told reporters after the game.
"He's a huge role model for the younger generation that's coming up playing this game. I mean he's doing stuff that kids do in Wiffle ball games and backyard baseball. It shouldn't be done."
Bautista said after the game he did not mean any disrespect by lifting the bat above his head and tossing it high in celebration, saying it was just in the heat of the moment as the Blue Jays set up an ALCS showdown with the Kansas City Royals.
"I can't really remember what was going through my mind, to be honest with you," Bautista said.
"After I made contact, I didn't plan anything I did. ... I knew I did something great for the team at the moment of impact."
Benches cleared after Bautista's homer, as Dyson took exception to Edwin Encarnacion's hand gestures to the crowd before he entered the batters' box.
The dugouts emptied again after Dyson and Troy Tulowitzki exchanged words following the final out of the inning when Dyson approached Tulo at home plate and bumped him in the rear end.
