George Russell has been fitted with a completely new power unit ahead of the Singapore Grand Prix weekend, with all elements exceeding his permitted allocation for the season.
Following the mechanical failure that forced him out of the Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia a week ago, Russell was already expected to endure a difficult weekend at Marina Bay due to looming power unit penalties. Mercedes have opted to replace every single core component, retaining only previously used auxiliary elements from his existing pool.
Because each component (internal combustion engine, turbocharger, exhaust, MGU-K, energy store, and control electronics) is his first extra element beyond the limit, Russell picks up a 10-place grid penalty for each. That results in a combined 60-place grid drop for Sunday's race, effectively locking the Briton to the back of the field on one of the hardest circuits on the calendar to overtake.
