George Russell took the lead at the start of the Singapore Sprint, but retired at the end of the opening lap after losing control of his car on the exit of the final corner around a wet Marina Bay circuit.

Following the session, the Mercedes driver explained the error that caused him to hit the white line and spin out. The incident compounded a frustrating weekend for the Briton, who will start Sunday's race from the back of the grid due to a penalty.

"I just misjudged it. Coming off the corner, I got on the throttle, got more power than expected from the battery, ran slightly wide and touched the white line—and rule number one in the wet is not to touch the white lines. A very, very silly mistake. I was overconfident. I think that's my first crash of the year, but it's frustrating given the position we were in," Russell explained.
