Eddie Jones offers Wales advice
Wales have what it takes to topple South Africa in the Rugby World Cup quarter-finals according to the man who orchestrated the tournament's greatest shock, Eddie Jones.
Japan coach Jones masterminded a famous 34-32 victory over the Springboks in their opening Pool B clash last month, but his side then became the first team to win three group matches and not make the knockout stages.
South Africa responded to that defeat by winning the next three matches and topping the pool, and Heyneke Meyer's men are favourites to reach the semi-finals.
However, Jones believes Wales have the capability to beat the two-time champions in Saturday's contest at Twickenham, and told coach Warren Gatland to target fly-half Handre Pollard and scrum-half Fourie du Preez.
"If I were Warren Gatland then I would be sending Jamie Roberts in hard on fly-half Handre Pollard as much as possible," he wrote in his column for the Daily Mail.
"Pollard's a brave guy but he's not a dominant tackler. So if Wales send in Roberts they can gain line momentum relatively easily, but Wales have to go with pace and precision to succeed.
"Damian de Allende at 12 is a very good player but he's quite an inexperienced Test player. If Wales attack Pollard then De Allende will want to defend tighter. That may end up opening a few gaps, which would give Wales the opportunity to play wider and find spaces to exploit in midfield.
"Fourie du Preez started on the bench when we beat South Africa but now he is back in the line-up, he is the heart and soul of this Springbok team.
"From scrum-half he runs all their tactics, he gets their forwards on the front foot and he's got a superb kicking game. And you watch how many times he will take the high ball in defence, he almost plays like a second full-back.
"He lacks that lightning acceleration he had when I was working with him in 2007 but he's an extremely experienced, smart player and Wales have to hassle him as much as possible.
"The flankers must take any opportunity they can to get off their line and deny him space. If you take away a half-back's time and space then they can get flustered.
"If Du Preez dominates then I think South Africa will win comfortably. But if Wales can disrupt him, they will have a chance."
