The New South Wales State of Origin star has been with the Bulldogs since 2011, but it is thought that salary cap restraints meant they were unable to offer the 26-year-old the deal he wanted.

Subsequently, Hodkinson - who has played 109 NRL games - will join the Knights on a three-year contract.

"Trent's signing is a major coup for our club," chief executive officer Matt Gidley told Knights' official website.

"Trent is the current NSW half-back and has proven on many occasions, in grand finals and Origin matches, his ability to steer his team to victory.

"Our club has a young and talented back line in place and we look forward to Trent assisting our team to realise their potential."
