Ronaldo's Stern Message to Critics: You Tried to 'Kill' Me, But It Wasn't Worth It
The 41-year-old forward made the statement on the eve of Portugal's Round of 16 clash against Spain at what he has confirmed will be his final World Cup. During the press conference, he displayed a mix of optimism, humor, and sentimentality.
"I'm not the player I once was, but I'm not doing too badly," declared the Portuguese captain, highlighting his three goals in four matches at the North American World Cup – two against Uzbekistan in a 5-0 group stage victory and a penalty in the 2-1 win over Croatia in the Round of 16.
One of the greatest players in history, he responded cheerfully to journalists eager to question him about his future and the criticism he has faced during the tournament. "It's been like this since I was 18, and it won't change. I've always put my heart and soul into achieving our goals, whether I'm playing or not, I will always play an important role.
As I've said before, I'll retire when I decide to, not when you decide. You always ask the same question. I don't want to focus on that because it's not that important," AFP quoted him as saying.
Ronaldo stated that this World Cup has been the most enjoyable for him, citing the "emotions" both on and off the pitch. When again pressed about his international future, he retorted: "You've been trying to 'kill' me for the past 23 years, but you must have realized it's not worth it, it's a waste of time, but you keep trying and trying and trying. I'm so used to it," said Ronaldo, who is the all-time leading scorer in international football.
"I won't be more or less Cristiano Ronaldo if I win the World Cup. Age gives you the maturity and experience to see how relative things can be. I even thank you for the attacks I feel after turning 40... Criticism is how you grow, so thank you for doing that," Ronaldo continued, as he was applauded off the press conference stage.
The former Manchester United, Real Madrid, and Juventus player even singled out one reporter, stating, "I know he doesn't like me," and challenged him to ask a question, AFP reported.
"To talk to you, some of you, especially those who don't like us, I remember people's faces very well," he said with a smile. "Listen, I'll be honest: whatever happens tomorrow, Cristiano Ronaldo will leave with a clear conscience. Not 100 percent, but 1000 percent, because in life and football, I've given it my all."
