Lautaro Pereyra, an 18-year-old attacking midfielder turning heads in South America, has attracted interest from several clubs, prompting River Plate to take steps to protect their negotiating position. According to Argentine outlet El Intransigente on Monday, the club is moving proactively to stave off potential suitors, most notably Benfica, who are reportedly keeping a close eye on the youngster.
Pereyra has already made 14 first-team appearances for River Plate this year, tallying one goal and one assist. The Buenos Aires giants have secured the prospect on a professional contract through 2028 with a €100 million release clause, but there is a growing expectation within the club that offers from Europe could arrive in January.
While Benfica continue to monitor Pereyra's development and status, the Lisbon side have yet to make a formal inquiry or bid. Media in Argentina, however, emphasize Benfica's proven track record of scouting and developing Argentine prospects, highlighting Enzo Fernández and, more recently, Gianluca Prestianni as prominent examples.
Benfica's current squad already features another Argentine attacking midfielder: 20-year-old talent Claudio Echeverri, who is currently at the Estádio da Luz on loan from Manchester City in a deal that includes a €21 million purchase option.
