Deng, world champion in the 63kg class for the past two years, lifted 262kg in total to set a new milestone.

In addition, the 23-year-old Chinese set a record with her clean and jerk, lifting a mighty 147kg on her way to victory.

Only the second woman in the 63kg event to claim Olympic gold as the reigning world champion, Deng finished ahead of Choe Hyo-sim of North Korea and Kazakhstan's Karina Goricheva.

"I am very excited and thrilled," said Deng. "At first, I was very nervous, because it was my first Olympic Games, but I won so I am just super excited.
