A 19-year-old female athlete, Amaka Ogoegbunam, has been awarded a university scholarship and N1m cash reward by the Anambra state government for winning a gold medal at the just-concluded African Athletic Championships.
Anambra state governor, Willie Obiano, announced the reward, when he received the athlete at his Awka office on Tuesday.
Obiano said his administration will continue to reward those who bring honour to the state and encouraged youths to strive for excellence.
The athlete's coach, Johnny Igboka, was also rewarded with N500,000.
Ogoegbunam won the gold medal in the 400m hurdle event.
According to the State's Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Tony Nnacheta, Ogoegbunam is a well decorated athlete
He said she won three gold medals at the National Sports Festival in 2011 and another three gold medals and one silver at the last African Junior Championships.
