“We have to be objective – we were technically inferior. The fault is ours. But I will ask one question: did the referee have the level to officiate a semi-final? I won't answer. There were quite a few situations…,” Deschamps stated after the match at the time.

Barton had remained silent until now but has finally decided to speak out. In an interview on YouTube with Jorge Ramos, the referee assured that the coach's statements did not affect him. He reiterated that his presence at such a high level is the result of many years of hard work.

“No, it absolutely did not affect me (what Deschamps said). Everyone has the right to their own opinion. We know what we've been through, what we've fought for, how we've earned it, and we know why we are here. No comment will make us doubt the reason for our presence here,” Barton declared.

Beyond the controversy, the referee expressed particular pride in representing El Salvador on the world stage. He believes his journey proves that officials from smaller nations can reach the highest level. He hopes to pave the way for other referees from the region.

The referee also shared that the support and congratulations from FIFA's head of referees, Pierluigi Collina, after the match were among his greatest satisfactions during that World Cup.
