Dangerous driver jailed for 10 years for causing death of friends

A reckless man, James Maughan, 22, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for dangerous driving that has led to death of his friends.

Maughan was driving at over 70mph when he lost control of his vehicle and smashed into a house, in Branton. This caused the Renault Megane he was driving to burst into flames leaving his friends trapped.

The driver and a 15-year-old boy who sat at the front were able to escape the fire, but his friends, Liam Aldred, 26, and Dean McIntyre, 27, were not so lucky.

A third man, who was at the backseat with the deceased however managed to escape death, but has a bad scar to show for it.

Following a trial at Sheffield Crown Court, South Yorkshire, Maughan was found guilty of two counts of causing death by dangerous driving and one charge of causing serious injury by dangerous driving.
