Switzerland's national football team is increasingly facing a barrage of hateful comments on social media. The Swiss are set to clash with Colombia in Vancouver on July 7th in a Round of 16 fixture at the 2026 World Cup. "Unfortunately, we can now anticipate when the risk of such despicable comments escalating increases. In these instances, the comment sections on our channels are often completely blocked. Some of the remarks targeted the origin and skin color of our players," a spokesperson for the Swiss team told the Keystone-SDA news agency.
The comments have already been handed over to authorities, who will investigate these cases of hate speech. Last week, FIFA announced an increase in racist comments during the World Cup. Approximately 11 percent of all online posts classified as offensive were racist in some form, the statement added. This marks a 3 percent increase compared to the same period during the last World Cup in Qatar in 2022. Around 1,000 social media accounts have already been reported to the police. Dutch internationals Justin Kluivert, Quinten Timber, and Crysencio Summerville also faced racist abuse online after the trio missed penalties in their Round of 16 loss to Morocco at the 2026 World Cup.
