Why does terrorism have no religion when non-Muslims kill people in America?
The history of the United States is sadly filled with
The latest one that left 59 dead and 527 wounded, surpasses all of them including the shooting in Orlando, Florida on June 12, 2016.
At that time, the shooting at a gay nightclub in Pulse was the deadliest American mass shooting at the time.
This act of terror that left 49 dead, 58 wounded was caused by a gunman named Omar Mateen.
In the aftermath of the attack, Mateen’s life was torn apart. Everything was examined including his religion which happened to be Islam. The fact that he called the Orlando police and swore allegiance to ISIS was not ignored.
Eventually, the authorities concluded that there was no evidence of communication between him and the terrorist group. However, this did very little from stopping Donald Trump from jumping on the “radical Islamic terrorism” train.
The Washington Post reports that the U. S president made negative comments about the Muslim community after the Orlando massacre.
In his words, “They know what’s going on. They know that [Omar Mateen] was bad. They have to cooperate with law enforcement and turn in the people who they know are bad. … But you know what? They didn’t turn them in. And you know what? We had death and destruction.”
Sadly, this is the harsh reality of American Muslims in the aftermath of the September 11 tragedy. As soon as there is an attack, they probably to pray that there is no link to Islam.
This appears to be the case in the recent attack on Sunday. So far, there is no evidence that the Las Vegas gunman, Stephen Paddock was a Muslim or has any ties to ISIS.
Now that we are not dealing with ‘usual’ act of terrorism committed by a Muslim, there is a clear difference in the government’s reaction.
For one, President Trump’s did not say anything about this tragedy being an act of terrorism in his speech on the attack in Las Vegas, rather he called it an at of "pure evil."
The investigation into the life of the white shooter has also been very different. Now, the police is doing what can only be described as ‘humanising’ him.
Time is being taken to talk to the family and neighbours in an attempt to figure out what his motive was. Authorities say that Paddock was an occasional gambler. He enjoyed hunting, aviation and was also a millionaire.
In an interview with Paste Magazine, one neighbour said, “People who knew him say he seemed like a very normal individual.”
His brother, Eric Paddock told the Daily Mail that he was “dumbfounded” and “shocked.” Later, he told the Las Vegas Review, “We have no idea how this happened. It’s like an asteroid just fell on top of our family.”
Speaking with reporters, he added that the gunman had “no religious affiliation” and “no political affiliation.”
As usual, ISIS has tried to claim the attack. However, US officials maintain that there is no evidence of a link to the international terrorist organization.
None of this changes the fact of the matter which is that the 64-year-old opened fire on concertgoers, ended up killing almost 60 people and injuring over 500.
We also know that the Police recovered 42 total guns from Paddock’s hotel room and home.
Yes, he is not a Muslim (thank God), has no ties to terrorist groups and a white, rich guy but it does not change what this is.
This is an act of terror that just happens to be done to Americans by one of their own. This makes it domestic terrorism.
Let's call it what it really is, just like the authorities would if it was a case of “radical Islamic terrorism.”
