This has to be Arsenal’s season. It has to be. Manchester City is floundering, Chelsea are out of it while Manchester United are struggling to make top four, so who’s left to lift the title, Arsenal.
But they can’t and that is because they have a certain Arsene Wenger as coach. People talk about his initial successes when he came to Arsenal, but those weren’t his doing. There was a certain man called David Dein. Dein overlooked the transfers of players and advised Wenger on contracts of players and did all the paperwork and ran the day to day goings on at the club and left Wenger to deal with coaching.
For me Dein was the best in the game. He ensured Arsenal had the players that could dominate the Premier League with only Manchester United to challenge, yet in my opinion, Wenger failed.
He won the league three times-1998, 2002 and 2004- and these were the seasons Alex Ferguson was building a new team. Anytime Ferguson came up with ‘his team’ they went on to dominate the league with Wenger chasing him.
Wenger never dominated the league.
His biggest failure in my own opinion is his failure to win the Champions League with his best team (the invincible squad of 2014).
Wenger had a team with Thierry Henry at his peak, Patrick Vieira in the middle and Sol Campbell at the back. Yet Wenger could not win the Champions League with this team not even the double- Arsenal fans keep talking about a gold trophy for their 2004 Premier League win.
Ferguson won the Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League trophy in 1999 and won the league and UCL double in 2008.
Pep Guardiola won the treble with his team in 2009, Luis Enrique won same with his team last season. These are what top coaches have achieved with their best sides.
Since they last won the league in 2004, Arsenal have managed to put together some decent sides, thanks to Wenger’s faith in youth – he had no choice anyway as he had access to limited funding due to the building of the Emirate Stadium.
His 2008 side that had the likes of Emmanuel Adebayor, Cesc Fabregas, Alexander Hleb, Robin van Persie etc had the chance of winning the league but bottled it towards the end of the season.
In 2011, they also had another shot at the title this time with Samir Nasri in the team but they also fell out, while in the 2013/2014, they led the league table for the most week yet finished fourth.
This season, with just Leicester City and Tottenham and may be City to challenge, Arsenal are about bottling it again.
Their 2-3 loss to a depleted Manchester Unitedside on Sunday was embarrassing. But that is Arsenal for you. When it matters most, they fall flat on their back, without fight and grit and disappoint.
Who are we to blame, of course, Wenger. He is the manager of the side and a football team is a reflection of its manager.
Wenger does not exude confidence, no winning mentality, comfortable with qualifying for the Champions League without any chance of winning.
When you see a Jose Mourinho team, you see him written all over it, so also Ferguson, Guardiola, etc.
Wenger is written over Arsenal, that is why they can never win the league or the Champions League with him.
