Prominent Top Boxer Speaks for First Time About Murdered Brother: 'That's How He Died'
The Bronze Bomber reveals that his 'other' brother (he also has a younger brother, Marsellos, who also boxes) chose the wrong path in America. In Tuscaloosa, gangs control parts of the city in the US state of Alabama, and Wilder's unnamed brother was involved. "I still think about him every day," the boxing legend stated for the first time in an exclusive interview with the Daily Mail in England.
'He was instantly dead'
"My brother was very smart. He was creative and unique with his words, but he was always in trouble. He was always in jail because he was also in a gang. That's how he died. Someone hit him on the back of the head, and he was instantly dead. I can still remember the moment I was told he had passed away. You never truly get over things like that."
'It hurt so much'
The tough boxer maintained a strong exterior, but inside, he was breaking. "It hurt so much inside, but I didn't shed a tear. I didn't want to let anyone ruin what I wanted to achieve (becoming a professional boxer, ed.). That was the path he chose for himself. He told me he was the black sheep of the family, but I still don't know why he made the choices and decisions he did."
'Accept and move on'
According to Wilder, everyone is responsible for their own life. "Even if you choose the wrong path, you have to accept it and deal with the consequences. That's what he did. He accepted it and dealt with it. Even if it cost him his life, he lived the way he wanted to. So I had to accept that and move on myself."
Wilder vs. Chisora
Heavyweight Wilder is set to fight Britain's Chisora on Saturday, April 4th, at the O2 Arena in London. The now forty-year-old Bronze Bomber is best known for his bouts against Tyson Fury.
