The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) has confirmed the departure of national team coach Roberto Martinez. Martinez himself announced his resignation after the team's World Cup exit. The Spaniard's contract was set to expire and will not be renewed. "The FPF officially announces the termination of its contractual relationship with national coach Roberto Martinez and his staff," the statement read.
Portugal was eliminated from the 2026 World Cup after a 0-1 defeat to Spain in the Round of 16 on Monday. The 52-year-old Spaniard was appointed to the position in January 2023, following his departure from the Belgian national team. He led the Portuguese to the Nations League trophy in 2025. The FPF added that it has already initiated the process of finding Martinez's successor "with the aim of preserving the winning culture" within the national team.
