The Portuguese men's senior national volleyball team is currently in Azerbaijan, where they will compete in the final stage of the European League's regular season, hoping to secure a top-four finish. Head coach João José's team needs to win both upcoming matches against Azerbaijan and Hungary, and will also rely on other results to qualify.
The Portuguese contingent arrives at this decisive phase, running from June 19th to 21st, buoyed by their third consecutive victory, a 3-1 (25-19, 20-25, 25-23, and 25-18) triumph over Latvia at Nave Costa Pereira in Matosinhos. This result brings Portugal's total to nine points in the overall standings.
National coach João José prefers to concentrate on his team's performance rather than relying on external factors. The coach emphasized the importance of maintaining their high level of play to overcome the upcoming challenges, stating that Hungary and Azerbaijan are “opponents with distinct characteristics, but who will demand the same commitment shown in Matosinhos.”
João José also expressed satisfaction with the development of the new generation of players, praising the squad's talent and the need for the athletes to “unlock their potential in play.” Despite anticipating logistical and physical difficulties due to travel and competitive intensity, the coach highlighted the team's effectiveness, especially in serving.
Similarly, middle blocker Kelton Tavares, who scored 11 points (five blocks) against Latvia, revealed that the strategy involved “good tactical organization and aggressive serving” to counter the opponent's physical prowess. The player emphasized the team's collective growth and their ambition to capitalize on their current momentum to win the upcoming matches.
In the overall European League standings, the Netherlands stands out as the sole undefeated team, having yet to drop a single set after victories against Georgia and Slovakia. Estonia, Finland, Denmark, and Israel follow with the same number of wins but having conceded sets. Notably, the Israeli squad boasts the competition's top two scorers, Shay Mayo Liberman and Mark Rura.
The Road to the Finals and EuroVolley 2026
Should Portugal finish in the top four, they will compete in the semi-finals between June 27th and July 1st. The two-legged final is scheduled for July 8th to 12th. This competition also serves as preparation for the 2026 European Championship, which will be held in Italy, Bulgaria, Finland, and Romania. The national team will be based in Bulgaria, where they will face opponents such as Poland, Bulgaria, Israel, Macedonia, and Ukraine.
The top four teams in the overall standings will secure qualification for Euro2028.
