Portugal's men's national volleyball team saw their hopes of qualifying for the European League finals dashed this Saturday after a 3-0 defeat to Hungary in Baku, Azerbaijan. This result, from the fifth round of the competition, eliminates Portugal from contention for the top four spots and, consequently, direct qualification for the 2028 European Championship.
The Portuguese squad, who had previously accumulated three wins and only one loss against group leaders Denmark, failed to impose their game and succumbed to the Hungarians with set scores of 25-18, 25-23, and 25-22. This setback allowed Hungary to leapfrog Portugal in the standings, with the Magyars concluding their participation with four victories and two defeats.
The first set was characterized by reception difficulties for the Portuguese side, limiting setter Bruno Dias's options. Compounding this, numerous service errors allowed Hungary, fueled by Kristof Horváth's serves, to establish an early four-point lead, which they comfortably managed to close out the set with a commanding 25-18.
In the second set, the national team, led by João José, showed improvement, balancing the match until midway through. However, serves from Marcell Koch and once again from Horváth created renewed difficulties, allowing Peter Nagy's team to pull ahead. Despite a late surge, Portugal couldn't prevent the 25-23 loss.
Entering the third and final set, the Portuguese team started stronger and managed to take the lead. Nevertheless, several unforced errors, particularly hitting shots out of bounds, allowed Hungary to recover. From that point on, Portugal was forced to play catch-up but without success, ultimately losing 25-22.
With nine points, Portugal now sits in 12th place among 27 national teams and will bid farewell to the tournament this Sunday in a match against hosts Azerbaijan, which will serve merely as a formality.
