Over the Last Decade: Real Madrid Lead Barça in Penalties Awarded, Catalans Hold Red Card Advantage
Amid ongoing controversies surrounding refereeing in Spanish football, statistics offer a clear insight into the reality on the pitch. An analysis by Stats Perform over the last decade reveals that Barcelona have played a total of 862 minutes with a numerical advantage, equivalent to nearly ten full matches (9.57 games). This figure stands in sharp contrast to the records of their main rivals, Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid.
Real Madrid have a negative balance in this regard, having spent 91 minutes down to ten men. The situation for Atlético Madrid is even more pronounced – Los Colchoneros have played with a man down for a staggering 330 minutes, the equivalent of 3.66 full matches.
These numbers directly reflect the red cards shown over the period. Barcelona's opponents have been sent off 59 times, while Blaugrana players have received marching orders on 30 occasions, creating a positive differential of +29 dismissals. The picture is vastly different for the Madrid clubs: Real Madrid have received 38 red cards compared to 39 for their opponents, while Atlético have suffered the most, with 45 sendings-off against just 30 for their adversaries.
Real Madrid Lead in Penalties Awarded
However, the statistics shift in Real Madrid's favour when it comes to spot-kicks. The capital club top the charts for net penalties awarded over the past ten years. Los Blancos have been awarded 101 penalties while conceding 45, resulting in a positive differential of +56. Barcelona hold a +43 penalty balance (76 in their favour, 33 against), while Atlético boast a record of 57 taken and 50 conceded (+7).
Across the ten-year period under review, league titles also mirror this dominance at the top – Barcelona have clinched five La Liga crowns, Real Madrid four, and Atlético Madrid one. In the current campaign, Hansi Flick's side sit atop the table with a maximum 27 points. Diego Simeone's Atlético closely trail the leaders with 26 points, while José Mourinho's Real Madrid occupy third place with 21 points ahead of the upcoming El Clásico.
Fouls and Bookings on a European Scale
The data reveals another intriguing detail: Real Madrid rank among the teams committing the fewest fouls across Europe's top five leagues. Averaging 8.56 fouls per game, the Spanish giants are surpassed only by PSG (5.86), Everton (7.43), Inter (8.14), and Torino (8.50).
At the same time, however, Los Blancos are among the most severely penalised sides on the continent relative to the number of infractions committed. Real Madrid receive a booking for every 4.28 fouls. Only Hull City (3.45), Venezia (3.55), and Genoa (3.78) see cards brandished at a higher rate per foul, with Everton and Bournemouth sharing a similar mark of 4.33.
