The 2026 World Cup final brought disappointment for the Argentine national team, who couldn't withstand Spain, losing by a narrow margin in extra time. However, after the final whistle from Slovenian referee Slavko Vinčić, not everything was amicable between the key players. On the contrary, a heated exchange erupted between Nicolás Otamendi and Rodri, with Mikel Oyarzabal also getting involved.
The Spanish captain attempted to congratulate his opponent, but the seasoned Argentine defender had something to say: "You were crying all week. You and (Aymeric) Laporte, both of you. That's not how it's done, mate, you were complaining to the referees," Otamendi bluntly accused him, while the midfielder feigned surprise, asking, "About what, about what?" with a bewildered expression.
At that moment, the La Roja forward approached, trying to calm the Argentine, but after being ignored, he retreated. Rodri mumbled something in his defense, calling for "respect," but Otamendi cut him off: "I respect you, but you shouldn't talk like that, understand?" The midfielder didn't back down, continuing to ask, "What did I say?" while the camera, capturing the entire scene up close, was already showing the back of the new River Plate signing, who continued to speak in Basque.
In all likelihood, Otamendi hadn't forgiven the Spaniards for their pre-match comments targeting Argentina's playing style. "We shouldn't succumb to provocations," the opposing leader had remarked, but the sharpest words, as the Argentine emphasized, came from Laporte.
"In recent matches, we've seen things that surprised us greatly – actions that are overlooked. Especially with Argentina, a team that leaves many 'messages.' This shouldn't be allowed in football, especially in such major tournaments, because it can destabilize and anger you. Part of the referee's job is to control these things so they don't get out of hand. If one or two players can do it, the match will get out of control," Laporte had stated on the eve of the final.
