French club Nice has announced the signing of midfielder Axel Witsel. The 37-year-old Belgian, who became a free agent this summer after departing Girona, has penned a one-year deal with an option for a further season.
Earlier reports suggested that "Les Aiglons" viewed the experienced midfielder as a potential replacement for Laurent Abergel, who sustained a cruciate ligament injury. During the 2025/2026 season, Witsel made 32 appearances in La Liga, scoring one goal and providing two assists. While he featured in only two matches at the World Cup, he boasts an impressive 140 caps for Belgium.
Throughout his extensive career, Witsel has also played for Standard Liège, Benfica, Borussia Dortmund, Atlético Madrid, and Tianjin.
