Atlético Madrid announced on Saturday the signing of Cuti Romero, the Argentine international center-back, who arrives in the Spanish capital from Tottenham, where he was one of the team's captains.

The 28-year-old defender was the top target for coach Diego Simeone, who sought to bolster and lead a defensive line that recently saw the departure of Frenchman Clément Lenglet to Benfica.

This year's World Cup runner-up has penned a deal with the Colchoneros until 2031. According to Spanish media, the transfer fee is €33 million, with an additional €7 million in potential bonuses. This figure doesn't seem excessive given the current market, especially considering Madrid's long-standing interest in the player since last season, when they were met with resistance from the London club.

A product of Argentina's Belgrano academy, Romero made his move to Europe in 2018, joining Genoa, where he spent two seasons. A year at Atalanta followed before his transfer to Tottenham, where he made 156 appearances over five seasons with the Spurs.
