Nigerian striker nets as Watford beat Newcastle United
Nigerian international striker, Odion Ighalo netted his 14th Premier League goalof the season as Watford beat Newcastle United on Saturday, January 23.
Having gone four games without a goal, Ighalo opened goal for Watford just 44 seconds into the second half after the first went goalless.
Ighalo was set up by his striker partner Troy Deeney with a through ball for him to round Newcastle United goalkeeper Elliot to score his 14th league goal of the season.
The 26-year-old is on course to equal or even beat the record of most goals scored by a Nigerian set by Yakubu Aiyegbeni for Blackburn.
Watford fans even have a new song for him, turning Spandau Ballet’s 1983 hit ‘Gold’ with the line ‘Always believe in… Ighalo’,
Twelve minutes later he turned provider for Watford’s second of the game bringing down a stray ball from a set piece before leaving it to centre back CraigCathcart to finish.
Newcastle got pulled one goal back through Jamaal Lascelles who headed in Jonjo Shelvey’s corner into the net.
