Martins and Shenhua’s big money signing Carlos Tevez could not prevent their side’s defeat at the hands of Brisbane Roar in a play-off.

The Nigerian striker was guilty of missing goal scoring chances in Shenhua’s 2-0 home defeat.

Brisbane Roar took the lead just 87 seconds into the game through Brandon Borrello before Tommy Oar extended the lead just before half-time.

Martins had the chance to level the score but could not take advantage after he was handed an opportunity by Luke De Vere's hesitancy.

Tevez also tried to get on the score sheet but was thwarted by goalkeeper Jamie Young.

Shenhua will now be left to concentrate on the Chinese Super League, which returns next month.

They finished fourth last season with 48 points from 30 games.
