Nuno Borges, Portugal's top-ranked tennis player, kicked off his grass-court season with a victory, securing his spot in the second round of the 's-Hertogenbosch tournament in the Netherlands. The player from Maia overcame Frenchman Terence Atmane in straight sets.
The current world No. 50 defeated the No. 53 in the rankings with a double 6-4, in a match that lasted just 67 minutes. This marked Borges' first match on the surface, serving as preparation for Wimbledon, the third Grand Slam of the year.
The Portuguese player's performance was highlighted by an impeccable serve, as he conceded only three points on his service games and faced no break points throughout the entire match.
In the next round, Nuno Borges will face the winner of the clash between Croatian Marin Cilic (world No. 47), a Wimbledon finalist in 2017 and US Open champion in 2014, and Canadian Denis Shapovalov (world No. 42), who was recently eliminated by Jaime Faria at Roland Garros.
Borges will also participate in the Dutch tournament's doubles draw, partnering with Australian Marc Polmans. The Portuguese-Australian duo will take on French pair Theo Arribage and Albano Olivetti, who are the top seeds in the competition.
