Nuno Borges has been knocked out of the ATP 250 's-Hertogenbosch tournament in the Netherlands, following a defeat by Croatian Marin Cilic in the round of 16. The Portuguese tennis player, ranked 50th in the world, failed to convert a match point in a contest that had been suspended due to rain the previous day.
The player from Maia was leading 6-3, 6-5 and held a match point to close out the encounter when bad weather halted play. Upon resumption this Friday, Cilic, a former world number three, showcased his grass-court expertise at the Libema Open, forcing a tie-break in the second set and ultimately completing the comeback.
After 2 hours and 18 minutes, the 37-year-old Croatian veteran, a 2014 US Open champion and Wimbledon finalist, secured victory with a 3-6, 7-6 (7/5), 6-3 scoreline, advancing to the next round.
This marked the third career meeting between the two players. The head-to-head now stands at two wins for Cilic, who had previously defeated Borges on the clay courts of the Estoril Open in 2021, and one for the Portuguese number one, who got the better of the Croatian on the hard courts of Hong Kong earlier this season.
