Sam Querrey sent shockwaves around Wimbledon by ending defending champion Novak Djokovic's hopes of winning a first calendar Grand Slam with a staggering third-round victory.

Querrey rattled the top seed when he won the first two sets on Friday before rain halted his momentum on Court Number One and the world number 41 returned to dethrone the top seed the following afternoon, wrapping up a sensational 7-6 (8-6) 6-1 3-6 7-6 (7-5) win.

Djokovic had not been defeated at a major tournament since losing to Stan Wawrinka in the French Open final 13 months ago, but the world number one's 30-match winning run in grand slams came to a juddering halt at the All England Club.

American Querrey had only beaten the 12-time grand slam champion, who won the previous four majors, once in nine attempts before holding his nerve to pull off the biggest win of his career at SW19 after further rain delays.

The towering Californian, 28, has never been beyond the fourth round of a grand slam, but will get the opportunity to better that record when he faces Nicolas Mahut after firing down 31 aces as he beat a world number one for the first time.

Djokovic must reflect on being unable to become the first man since Rod Laver in 1969 to win all four majors in the same year after failing to reach at least the quarter-finals of a grand slam for the first time in seven years.

After being left shell-shocked on Friday, Djokovic was far closer to matching his usual standards upon the resumption, racing into a 4-0 lead before but rain forced a suspension to give the outsider a breather.

A two-hour break clearly did Querrey good, as he made Djokovic work for the third set, breaking back before a rasping forehand from the favourite reduced the deficit to 2-1.

Querrey fended off three break points prior to a brief break due to the weather and as many in his next service game to frustrate the disgruntled Serbian.

Djokovic also struggled on serve, but saved two break points to level at 2-2 and let out a huge roar in the sixth game following a stunning half volley before holding again after finding himself in trouble.

Querrey was unable to take three break points in that game and it was Djokovic who took the upper hand when he punched a forehand winner down the line to lead 5-4.

He was unable to serve out the set, though, getting a volley all wrong and Querrey was one game from winning the match at 6-5 when the rain returned yet again.

Djokovic forced a tie-break, but was not his ruthless self as he surrendered a 3-1 advantage before his reign came to an end when he thrashed a forehand wide on an incredible afternoon in south-west London.
