Neuer: We didn't meet expectations, but I don't regret returning to play for Germany for a moment
Germany's legendary goalkeeper, Manuel Neuer, took to social media to address the national team's humiliating World Cup exit, which came after a penalty shootout loss to Paraguay. Neuer himself set a new record for most World Cup appearances by a goalkeeper with 23 matches, yet he failed to keep a clean sheet throughout the current tournament.
The veteran shot-stopper wrote on Instagram:
It has always been an honor for me! 🇩🇪
Our early exit from the World Cup is incredibly disappointing. We didn't meet expectations and should have progressed much further in this tournament. This outcome saddens me deeply.
I made a conscious decision to play for Germany again. On one hand, because I have always felt immense pride wearing the national team jersey. On the other hand, because at 40 years old, with the experience of four World Cups behind me, I wanted to support the younger players as much as possible, both on and off the field, and help German football.
Despite this bitter elimination, I do not regret that decision for a single moment. My disappointment is indescribable, but above all, a deep sense of gratitude remains.
Thank you for your support throughout all these years and during this tournament.
Sincerely,
Manuel".
Neuer, a 2014 World Cup winner, has made 128 appearances for Germany, conceding 123 goals and keeping 50 clean sheets. The goalkeeper ranks fifth in the history of the national team for appearances, behind Lothar Matthäus, Miroslav Klose, Thomas Müller, and Lukas Podolski.
