Phoenix fired head coach Jeff Hornacek earlier in the day after the Suns lost 19 of their past 21 games to fall to 14-35 this NBA season.

Watson becomes the 17th coach in franchise history, having joined the team in the off-season as assistant.

He will now take over a team riddled with injuries and on a run of 14 straight road losses.

There was some speculation former Suns All-Star point guard Steve Nash would fill in, but those rumours were quickly dismissed.

Watson had a 13-year NBA career, playing for the likes of the Memphis Grizzlies and Utah Jazz.
