The Mini driver appears to be cruising to the overall victory and will surely achieve that goal providing he avoids any serious incidents along the way.

Al-Attiyah led for much of the stage from Calama in Chile to Salta in Argentina on Wednesday and his two closest rivals in the overall standings - Toyota's Giniel de Villiers and Yazeed Al-Rajhi of Yazeed Racing - struggled to keep pace.

The 44-year-old eventually crossed the line in three hours 49 minutes and 59 seconds to claim his fourth stage win of this year's race, with Mini driver Orlando Terranova a minute and 35 seconds further back.

Al-Rajhi came home third, but is now 43 minutes and eight seconds adrift of Al-Attiyah in the overall standings, while De Villiers was fourth.

The South African is Al-Attiyah's closest challenger, but trails the leader by 28 minutes and 22 seconds.

It was a disappointing day for stage nine winner and defending champion Nani Roma of Mini, though, with the Spaniard crashing out after 193 kilometres.

Thursday's stage 11 will see competitors travel from Salta to Termas de Rio Hondo.
