According to various media reports, the Nigerian unit of South Africa-based telecom giant, MTN Nigeria, has asked for an out-of-court settlement in a suit it filed against the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) for imposing a N1.04 trillion fine against it.

According to today.ng, the company made this known at the Federal High Court, Ikoyi, and earlier today through its lawyer Chief Wole Olanipekun (SAN), who led a powerful 10-man team to the court.

MTN’s request turns out to be a surprising anticlimax especially since it was the company that took the case to court in the first place based on its claim that the regulator had no powers to impose such a fine on it in the first place.

The presiding judge adjourned the case till March 18 following MTN’s request. Both parties are expected to reappear in court with their mutually agreed terms on the matter.

MTN had been fined by the NCC for failing to deactivate 5.1 million unregistered subscribers.
