Formula 1 and MotoGP could join forces during the same race weekend at the United States Grand Prix. Organizers of the motorcycle world championship are reportedly considering a demonstration event at the Circuit of the Americas.
Following its €4.2 billion acquisition in 2024, Formula 1 owner Liberty Media has brought MotoGP under its umbrella. Given Liberty's success in transforming Formula 1 into a global phenomenon, there's hope that MotoGP will experience a similar positive impact in the coming years as the American media giant aims to enhance the championship's commercial prospects.
Early signs of this synergy are already emerging, with former Haas F1 team principal Guenther Steiner leading a group that acquired Tech3 KTM, and Ross Brawn recently joining the Pramac board.
Ever since Liberty's acquisition of MotoGP was announced, speculation has swirled about a joint race event between the two championships. While such an idea remains a distant prospect, the two series might have their first collaborative appearance later this year during the Formula 1 United States Grand Prix.
According to motorsport.com, Liberty Media is developing plans for MotoGP manufacturers to conduct demonstration laps during the Austin weekend at the Circuit of the Americas in October.
The event, scheduled between October 23rd and 25th, coincides with MotoGP's final visit to Phillip Island before the Australian Grand Prix moves to the street circuit in Adelaide next year. For this reason, current championship riders will not participate in the demonstration.
Discussions are currently underway with manufacturers regarding the feasibility of such an event, but several hurdles remain. It's still unclear who will cover transportation costs, which manufacturers will participate, and which riders they will enlist for the demonstration.
The event falls at an inconvenient time in the MotoGP calendar, as Australia is the first round of a triple-header, also including Malaysia and Qatar. To further complicate matters, the fate of the Qatar Grand Prix is uncertain due to the ongoing conflict in Iran.
Earlier this week, the FIA World Endurance Championship canceled its races in Qatar and Bahrain due to the conflict, while the Formula 1 Bahrain Grand Prix, scheduled for October 4th, will now take place in Malaysia.
The demonstration event is seen as a prime opportunity to introduce MotoGP to a new audience, as Austin is one of the most well-attended rounds on the Formula 1 calendar. Boosting MotoGP's popularity in the USA is a key mission for Liberty post-acquisition, especially since the championship's own race at the Circuit of the Americas has suffered from low attendance in recent years.
