A calf injury will prevent David Ferrer from competing in Monte Carlo. The Spaniard had been due to face Alexander Zverev in round two.

David Ferrer has pulled out of this week's Monte Carlo Masters due to a calf injury.

World number eight Ferrer missed the first ATP Masters 1000 event of the year in Indian Wells, citing fatigue, but returned to action in Miami – losing to Lucas Pouille in the last 32.

The Spaniard had been due to face Alexander Zverev in the second round in Monaco, but confirmed his withdrawal from the tournament via Twitter on Tuesday.

"Due to an injury in the soleus (calf), I will not be able to play the tournament in Monte Carlo," wrote Ferrer.

"You will be informed of my next return to the circuit!"
