AS Monaco, the reigning French basketball champions, have been barred from participating in professional competitions next season due to economic viability concerns. This decision was confirmed on Saturday by the French Basketball Federation (FFBB) after the club's appeal was rejected.
The FFBB's Appeals Chamber upheld the initial ruling by the Basketball League's financial control body, denying the Monegasque club entry into the professional Elite 1 and Elite 2 championships (first and second divisions) for the 2026/2027 season. The official statement cited the club's failure to submit requested documents within the stipulated deadlines as the reason.
It's worth noting that on July 3rd, the National Basketball League's (LNB) financial control body, the DNCCG, had already rejected AS Monaco's registration. The club had been crowned French champions on June 23rd. The decision was based on "insufficient guarantees regarding the club's economic viability for the upcoming season and the progress of the club's acquisition processes."
The Principality club, facing debts exceeding 24 million euros, still has the option to challenge this decision in the Administrative Court. However, before doing so, they must first file an appeal with the National Olympic Committee (CNOSF).
Via a post on the social media platform X, AS Monaco has already acknowledged the decision and announced that they will be exploring "the possibility of appealing" to the CNOSF.
