Hurting Joe Girardi proud of New York Yankees

New York Yankees manager Joe Girardi was left hurt but proud after his team's season ended on Tuesday.

The Yankees were shut out 3-0 by the Houston Astros to lose the American League (AL) wildcard game.

Dallas Keuchel pitched six strong innings on the back of just three days of rest to lead the Astros to their win in New York.

Girardi was left wondering what could have been but said his team simply failed to produce.

"It's really disappointing. It's hard. You know, seasons end abruptly and it's very difficult," he told a news conference.

"This is a club that fought all year long, and there's a lot of character in that room, and this hurts. And we just didn't get it done."

Solo home runs from Colby Rasmus and Carlos Gomez helped the Astros into a lead they would never relinquish.

But Keuchel was the hero as he gave up just three hits and struck out seven to put Houston into the AL Division Series against the Kansas City Royals.

"It felt like play-off baseball. It's hard not to get up for a game like this," Keuchel said.

"And if I had a chance to take the ball in the wildcard game, I didn't want to let my team-mates down.

"And I've worked so hard the last four years in the big leagues, especially with rebuilding with our team.

"I knew if we had a shot, I was going to give everything I possibly could into any game that I needed to pitch in. Thankful to get through six."
