Miss Mexico wins Miss Universe 2021
Miss Mexico, Andrea Meza emerged as the winner out of 74 contestants representing 74 countries.
The winner was crowned at Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Florida. The Top 5 contestants were Miss Brazil, Miss Dominican Republic, Miss India, Miss Mexico, Miss Peru.
The show was hosted by Mario Lopez and Olivia Culpo. She sauntered to victory in a shimmering red dinner gown.
Nigeria was absent from the competition this year, though Ghana was represented by Chelsea Tayui.
This year the contestants used the Miss Universe stage to discuss societal and political issues.
Miss Myanmar, Thuzar Wint Lwin wore a red outfit and carried a placard that read, “Pray for our people” for the costume segment of the competition. She won the best costume for the night.
This protest was because of the military coup that happened on Monday, February 1, 2021 which lead to the loss of lives. At least 790 people have been killed and 5000 people arrested.
Attention was also paid to Asian hate as Miss Singapore Bernadette Belle Ong wore a red bodysuit, thigh-high boots and made the flag of Singapore a cape. At the back of the cape was written "Stop Asian Hate."
It was refreshing to see the focus being shifted to social issues amidst the glitz and glamour of the night.
