Mike Perry's fight week took a turn for the worse as he dislocated his shoulder, leading to a first-round technical knockout loss against last-minute replacement Brandon Jenkins at the Brand Duel event in Orlando on Saturday night.
With Dillon Danis withdrawing just two days before the event, Perry stepped in to face Jenkins on minimal notice. However, early in the first round, his shoulder popped out. The fight continued, but it didn't take long for Jenkins to land the finishing blow – a heavy body kick followed by ground and pound.
"How much notice was it – 15 hours?" Jenkins stated after his victory. "I didn't hesitate at all, I knew I was coming. They called me, and I said 'yes.' I asked for Nate Diaz, but I got Mike Perry. I hope my next fight is against Nate Diaz."
Perry attacked from the outset, but Jenkins forced him to retreat with a well-executed spinning back elbow. Just as he started to gain momentum, Perry countered with a combination of punches, capped off by a heavy left that landed cleanly.
During one of the exchanges, Perry grimaced in pain as his shoulder visibly dislocated. Jenkins immediately capitalized with a body kick that sent "King of Violence" to the canvas.
Replays showed Perry's injury resulted from an extremely unusual incident. He was holding onto Jenkins with his left arm while throwing right uppercuts, but it was his left shoulder that popped out of its socket.
Instead of stopping the fight due to the injury, the referee allowed the bout to continue, and Jenkins relentlessly pressed his attack. He landed another brutal body kick, once again dropping Perry to the mat.
Jenkins followed him down and continued to unleash strikes until the referee decided he had seen enough. The fight was stopped 2:38 into the first round.
Perry remained on the canvas for several minutes. The medical team attended to him, attempting to reset his shoulder while the fighter writhed in agony.
This marks an incredibly unfortunate end for Perry, who initially signed on to fight Danis. Ultimately, he suffered a serious injury and lost to a new opponent confirmed just 48 hours before the event.
It remains unclear how long the shoulder injury will keep Perry out of competition. His night ended in defeat, while Jenkins secured the biggest victory of his career.
