Former England captain Michael Vaughan fears for Simon Kerrigan's Test career if he is picked to face India at Lord's.

The left-arm spinner is in line for his second Test appearance after being named in England's 14-man squad for the clash against India starting Thursday.

On debut, Kerrigan was taken for 53 runs off eight overs by Australia in the fifth Ashes Test in August last year.

Vaughan is worried for the 25-year-old, who he believes is not yet ready to play at international level.

"I fear for Simon Kerrigan," he told BBC Radio 5 Live.

"England have thrown him back into the environment of international cricket far too soon."

Vaughan said another performance like the one against Australia could signal the end of Kerrigan's career.

Australia batsman Shane Watson did most of the damage, smashing Kerrigan for 35 runs off 25 balls.

"If the second one goes badly, he can never come back from that again," Vaughan said.

"If he goes out on Thursday and all of a sudden the Indians climb into him and it's like that situation against Watson, he won't come back from that for a long time."

Vaughan said it would be "unfair" to play Kerrigan, who has taken just 28 wickets for Lancashire in county cricket this season.

"He's not pulled up any trees for Lancashire this season. Why rush the lad back in?" he said.

"Throwing him out to bowl at Lord's against an Indian batting line-up who can play spin with their eyes shut - I just think is unfair."
