McKenzie offered his resignation prior to Saturday's dramatic 29-28 Bledisloe Cup defeat against New Zealand and left his post after the loss in Brisbane.

His position had come under increasing pressure after their 14-0 Rugby Championship defeat to Argentina as well as off-field problems including the suspension of playmaker Kurtley Beale.

And Waratahs coach Cheika confirmed that talks were ongoing with the Australia Rugby Union to succeed McKenzie.

"It's a pretty humbling experience to be asked to be involved in something like that, but we'll see what happens," he told reporters.

"There are a few things to be ironed out, obviously the logistics etc... everything is so close. So we will see how it goes and work it out from there."

Australia are due to embark for their November internationals on Friday, the first of which takes place against Barbarians at Twickenham on November 1.

Further fixtures follow against Wales, France, Ireland and England, with Cheika unsure as to whether he could be appointed before setting off for Europe.

"We'll see how it happens," Cheika added.
