Lionel Messi continues to lead in World Cup goals, but he also holds an unenviable record. The legendary Argentine now tops the list for most missed penalties in World Cup finals. After failing to convert from the spot against Egypt, the forward has now missed four penalties. He previously held the unfortunate distinction of leading with three missed spot-kicks.
Messi's other missed penalties from 11 meters occurred against Iceland at the 2018 World Cup, against Poland in 2022, and against Austria in the group stage of the current tournament.
Furthermore, this marks the first time in history that a player has missed more than one penalty within a single World Cup.
This also brings Messi's total number of missed penalties in his illustrious career to 33.
