The world's most widely-used social network says the new encryption feature for its instant messaging platform is meant to support conversations about sensitive topics.

You will now be able to create one-to-one conversations in Messenger that will be end-to-end encrypted which can only be read on the device of the person you're communicating with.

There is also a timer that you can use to control the length of time each message you send remains visible within the conversation. If you have been following Facebook and its exploits lately, you will now that this is part of the social network's plan to take over the instant messaging game.

Facebook also says its technology uses a Signal Protocol developed by Open Whisper Systems.  Right now, the end-to-end encryption feature is only available on a test basis and does not support videos, GIFs, payments amongst other features for now.

In the past few months, other instant messaging apps including WhatsApp have already begun to implement end-to-end encryption following the FBI-Apple San Bernadino case which made the headlines a few months back.
