Mercedes "Slightly Disappointed" with 2026 Performance So Far

Mercedes Technical Director James Allison has offered his assessment of the first half of the 2026 Formula 1 season, and he's less satisfied than one might expect.

Allison admitted the team isn't as content as they'd hoped, despite the dominant start the Silver Arrows made following the introduction of new regulations. They clinched the first six races of the year but then managed only two victories in the subsequent five rounds, where Ferrari and McLaren proved capable of beating them.

In the drivers' standings, Andrea Kimi Antonelli holds a 50-point lead over Lewis Hamilton, while in the constructors' championship, the Silver Arrows boast a 72-point advantage over Ferrari. Despite this, Allison believes the numbers don't tell the whole story, as Mercedes has squandered a significant number of points in the first part of the campaign, primarily due to poor reliability.

These issues didn't just affect the factory team but also Mercedes' customer outfits – McLaren, Williams, and Alpine. This has undoubtedly been a source of frustration for everyone at Brackley, and especially at Brixworth, where the Silver Arrows' power units are manufactured.

Mercedes boss Toto Wolff has been particularly candid on the matter, previously insisting that the team “cannot fight for a championship” if it continues to lose crucial points due to reliability problems. Ahead of the Hungarian Grand Prix, the Austrian again conceded that Mercedes had failed to convert its performance into results, describing the lost points as a consequence of “self-inflicted issues.”

Despite everything, Antonelli has emerged as a leading force in the championship, while Russell has endured a more challenging period and trails his teammate by 59 points. For Allison, this makes Mercedes' current position both impressive and frustrating.

“It might sound a bit grumpy, but I'm probably not as happy as I'd like to be. If someone had offered us this position before the start of the season, I would have taken it immediately. But given the competitiveness of the car we have this year, I think we should have scored more points than we have,” Allison stated. “There's a certain degree of disappointment within the team about that. At the same time, it means we're looking forward to the second half of the season and the opportunity to rectify some of those missed opportunities,” the Silver Arrows' technical director added.
